Does anyone know specifically how Hermanus Van Inwegen acquired his land in the Peenpack Patent?  Does a deed or some other document exist?

History books are not quite clear on how Van Inwegen obtained land there.  One source says he was invited to join the first settlers because they needed him.

My guess is, he did not come to the area until after his first child was bp in  1702 in Kingston.  He was living in Kingston and had a job dressing flax there, per published genealogies about him.

No history book of the Peenpack neighborhood mentions the fact that Anthony Swartwout of Kingston (one of the original 7 Peenpack purchasers) died c. 1700.  After his death, his widow Jannetke Coobes married Hermanus Van Inwegen in 1701 at the RDC Kingston.   Their first child was baptized in May 1702 at the RDC Kingston.  Seems logical to me that the couple would not leave Kingston until after this baby was born and baptized, which was 5 years after the 1697 Peenpack Patent was obtained.

When Anthony Swartwout died c. 1700, he left his widow with 4 young sons to raise.  It is likely that his Swartwout sons would inherit their father's portion of the Peenpack Patent.

Anyone researching the Peenpack Patent -- how Hermanus Van Inwegen obtained his land, or the Swartwout's?

Hermanus married the widow of Anthony Swartwout.  Hermanus & Jane are buried at the Gumaer Cemetery in Godeffroy (now known as Pioneer Knoll Cemetery.)
Anthony left her with more children than just 4 sons & fair share of the patent.

The three Swartwout brothers that were owners of the original patent were:
Thomas Swartwout b.  ca 1659 Beverswyck (Albany), New Netherlands (oldest son of Roeloff Shout of Esopus.) d. ca 1723 Maghagkmeck, (Deerpark) Orange CO, NY, m. Elizabeth Gardiner abt 1682 dau. of Jacobus Janse and Josigja Gardnier.
Records can be found for him and his family living on the patent lands.

Antony Swartwout  bap. 11 MAY 1664 Dutch Reformed Church at Kingston, Ulster CO, NY, (son of Roeloff Shout of Esopus.) d. 1700 Maghaghkemeck, Orange CO, NY, m. Jannetje Jacobus Coobes / Cobus 8 MAY 1693 Received certificate Dutch Reformed Church at Bergen, NJ to DRC Kingstown, Esopus.
I think that he lived on patent, probably from the early days until his death, supposedly there in 1700, (Maghaghkemeck).

Bernardus Swartwout bap. 26 APR 1673, (Mother listed as Eefjen.) Dutch Reformed Church at Kingston, Ulster CO, NY, (youngest son of Roeloff Shout of Esopus.)  M. 1700 May 19 Dutch Reformed Church at Kingston, Ulster CO, NY.  Rachel Janse Schepmoes bap. 31 March 1678 Kingston, Ulster CO, NY. Dau. of Dirck Jansen Schepmoes and Maria Willems.
The Swartwout Chronicles state that  Bernardus, son of, Roeloff Shout of Esopus,  never lived on the lands. That he was unmarried when he purchased the lands with his older brothers Antoni and Thomas, but just held onto them, probably renting them out until 1741 when he sold lot 31 to his nephew, Jacobu Swartwout, 2nd son of Anthony Swartwout bap 1664.  Possible that he did live on the patent for a short while.
The Gumear history notes that he settled there and had a home, but Bernardus Coobes/ Coombes Swartwout  (son of Antony Swartwout  bap. 11 MAY 1664.)  bap. 31 OCT 1697 Dutch Reformed Church at Kingston, Ulster CO, NY. d. 1773 Lehman Twp., Northhampton CO, PA, m. Margaret Grietjen Dekker. inherited his share of his late fathers land on the patent upon reaching majority and this may have been the Barnardus that Gumear was thinking about.

Gumear history of Deerparkage 30
"FIRST SETTLERS.  In the year 1690, as near as can be determined, Jacob Cuddeback, Thomas Swartwout, Anthony Swartwout, Bernardus Swartwout, Peter Gumaer, John Tyse and David Jamison, settled in the present town of Deerpark, in the County of Orange and State of New York, on and near a handsome knoll or hill contiguous to a spring brook and a spring of living water, in the central part of the Peenpack flats. This spring still remains near its first location, but not as flush as formerly. The upper surface uf this hill is flat, and its elevation about 20 feet higher than the lowland surrounding it. The Indian name, " Peenpack, "was, by certain of the ancient people, said to be significant of this hill and spring.

Peter Gumaer located himself at the southwest end of the hill, John Tyse between that and the spring brook, Bernardus Swartwout on the easterly brow of the hill, a few rods westerly of the spring, where the cellar now remains ; Thomas Swartwout on the central part of the hill, opposite the spring, where the cavity of his cellar remains ; Jacob Cuddeback a few rods northeast of the northeast end of the hill, on the low round, where has been a cavity of his cellar, now leveled ; Anthony Swartwout, where the house formerly of Cornelius Van Inwegen stood, a few rods northeast of Cuddeback's place of residence, and David Jamison, somewhere near this last location.  Tyse and Jamison, it appears from other sources of information, did not become permanent settlers here."

Soon there were only 5 of these men as Tyse and Jamison died or left and no records have been found of them being in the area after this. Possibly they sold their shares to some of the other 5 or to others.

Many histories and genealogies note that only two of the brothers ever lived on the patent lands.

Thomas Swartwout b.  ca 1659 Beverswyck (Albany), New Netherlands (oldest son of Roeloff Shout of Esopus.) d. ca 1723 Maghagkmeck, (Deerpark) Orange CO, NY, m. Elizabeth Gardiner abt 1682 dau. of Jacobus Janse and Josigja Gardnier.
Records can be found for him and his family living on the patent lands.

d. 1773 Lehman Twp., Northhampton CO, PA, m. Margaret Grietjen Dekker. (son of Antony Swartwout  bap. 11 MAY 1664.) inherited his share of his late fathers land on the patent upon reaching majority and this may have been the Barnardus that Gumear was thinking about.

"According to Swartwout Chronicles, Barnardus was born Wiltwijck; baptized there on 4/26/1673; was still unmarried when he purchased land with his two brothers in the Magaghemeck Tract, lying north of the Delaware river and stretching along the west side of the Neversink River in 1696. Note that it is believed that the tract was purchased in 1690 but that the men did not get proper papers until 1696 or did not move there until then.
In 1741, having never occupied any of the Maghaghkemeck lands allotted to him, Barnardus Swartwout sold to his nephew Jacobus, second son of Antoni Swartwout, all that full lot, No. one, which fell unto him the said Barnardus Swartwout by the second division of the 1,200 acres of land which were formerly purchased by the said Swartwouts and company...”

Grantee records, Orange Co. LiberC:25 28 Oct 1741 — Bernardus Swartwout of Dutchess CO sold to Jacobus Swartwout of Orange Co for 126 pounds all that full lot No. 1 which fell unto him sold Bernardus by 2nd division of 1200 acres of land formerly purchased by said Swartwout and Company, said lot lying.

On his death, his widow and sons conveyed to “Jacobus Swartwout, Jr. of the Menisincks in Orange CO., merchant, the 7th share which the deceased, Barnardus Swartwout, had owned in the manor of Maghaghkemeck.” Ruth Thoden

It is possible that Barnardus settled for a short while and then, after his father's death went over to Hurley and took over his father's lands there. He would have still had the property at the patent but had no use for the wild tract with problems from Jersyemen.

Barnardus would then sell the lot to his nephew, son of Antoni (bap 1664 d. 1700) in 1741 and then after his death his widow and sons sold the rest of his holdings to this Jacobus. Major Jacobus Swartwout.Jacobus Swartwout “Jacobus Swartwout, Jr” bap.  29 MAR 1696 Dutch Reformed Church at Kingston, Ulster CO, NY m. 30 MAY 1721 Dutch Reformed Church at Kingston, Ulster CO, NY.  Antjen Gumaer b. 30 MAR 1693 Kingston, Ulster CO, NY.Dua. of Pierre & Esther (Hasbroucq / Hasbroeck / Hasbrouck ) Cuimard / Gumaer.

Interesting that Antony Swartwout (bap 1664 d. 1700) supposed to have died on the patent lands in 1700. In 1701 his widow marrried Harmanus Van Inwegen. I say this because, there is a story that the Swartwouts and Gumear and Cuddeback had lost so many other settlers to raids by the Jerseymen and other reasons that they asked Harmanus Van Inwegen, a large, powerful and fearless man to come and live in their settlement to help them fend off their enemies and gave him a parcel of land. Then Antony Swartwout (bap 1664 d. 1700) died and Harmanus Van Inwegen marries his widow, most likely then occupying the holdings of Antony Swartwout (bap 1664 d. 1700) as well as his own lot that he was given?

Now the question is, was a marriage contract written between he and Antony Swartwout (bap 1664 d. 1700)  widow to protect the minor children of Antoni?
Remember that Antoni,  bap. 1699, (son of Antony Swartwout (bap 1664 d. 1700)) who would sire the lines of Aaron the fifer, Moses, Ralph and Anthony. Sr. was just an infant. Harmanus would have been the step-father and the lands would normally be held until the sons came of majority.
I would imagine that the children of Antony Swartwout (bap 1664 d. 1700) stayed with their mother and step father, unless they or maybe some went to live with their grandfather or other relatives at Hurley until his death, I think in 1715?

Jannetje Coobes m. 2nd  Harmanus Berentsen Van VanInwegen 19 JAN 1701 at Kingston, Ulster CO, NY. He must have then owned Antoni Swartwout's land at Maghaghkemeck, but some went to Antoni's sons as they came of age.
1701 19 Jan; Heromandus Berenstsen, born Nimwegen, lived Kingston; Jannetje Coobes, widow of Antonie Swartwout, born Renselaarswyck(DRC Kingston)

Baptism records at D Ref Church at Kingston:
At least 2 children born to  Harmanus Van Inwegen and Jannetje (Coobes) Swartwout , widow of Antony Swartwout (bap 1664 d. 1700), Gerardus and Jenneke.

1702 May 10; Hermanus Barentse van Nimweeg, Jannetje Jacobus;  Gerardus    ; Thomas Noxon, Geertruy Noxons

1706 Jun 09; Herman Barentse, Jannetie Jacobse; Jenneke   ; Willem Oorstrande, Marytie Hagers

Gumear or Cuddebcak note that a Cornelius Van Inwegen later lived on the property that was originally Antony Swartwout (bap 1664 d. 1700) a few rods northeast of Cuddeback's place of residence.

Harmanus Berentsen Van VanInwegen  was a seafaring man in his youth and had seen much of the world. Was he married prior? There are Van Inwegens at the patent which could have been his children and possibly theirs or relatives of his.

Anyways, when Bernardus Coobes Swartwout bap. 31 OCT 1697 Dutch Reformed Church at Kingston, Ulster CO, NY. d.1773 Lehman Twp., Northhampton CO, PA, (son of Antony Swartwout (bap 1664 d. 1700)) reached the age of majority, he inherited his portion of his fathers lands and he and his family and descendants can be seen in the records of the patent lands. (Machaackemeck and  Minisink  church records on the patent lands and at other nearby churches which the patent holders had to travel to before they had a churches there or because other churches were closer or safer , as during the French and Indian Wars when the Patent land churches minister left. Places such as Kingston (Esopus) DRC where many of the records were made for marriage and baptisms, unfortunately the death record books were thought to have been removed before the British burned the church but were not and were lost. Churches at Sussex, NJ, Northampton, PA, Sullivan CO, NY, Bergen, NJ etc.

So Thomas and his family settled and stayed on the patent.

Bernardus Swartwout (youngest son of Roeloff Shout of Esopus) may have never been on the patent but he may have been there for a short while until he inherited his father's farm at Hurley or Gumear may have confused him with a later settler, Barnardus Coobes(son of Antoni bap. 1664.) who inherited his share of the lands of his late father on the patent upon reaching the age of majority. (What was this age at that time?)

1708 Inhabitants and Freeholders of Hurley, Ulster CO, NY.
Roleoff Swartwout £ 170    Roleoff Swartwout - Schout of Esopus
Bernardus Swartwout £30 son of Roleoff Swartwout - Schout of Esopus

Neighbourhood of Wagachkemeck 1714-1715
Note that Anthony Swartwout son of Roleoff Swartwout - Schout of Esopus died 1700 so would not be listed here.
Note that Barnardus Swartwout son of Roleoff Swartwout - Schout of Esopus took over his father’s lands at Hurley so would not be listed here.
This left Thomas as the only original Swartwout brother in this Tax List.

Thomas Swartwout £105  (Thomas Swartwout son of Roleoff Swartwout - Schout of Esopus)
Harman van Nimwegen £25 (2nd husband of widow of Antoni Swartwout bap. 1664.)Was it Antoni’s land or some that Harmon was given earlier, or both?
Peter Guymart £30
Jacob Coddebecq(?) £10
Jacobus Swartwout £5 Probably this was Jacobus Swartwout, son of Thomas bap 17 APR 1692 and married at Kingston 5 OCT 1714 notes lived at Minisink.
Totall Sume £175

1715 Militia Ulster CO, NY (The patent settlement was part of Ulster CO then and these men all listed together.)Foot Company command of CAPN Johannes Vernoy in the REGT of Ulster CO Jacob Rutsen COL
Thomas Swartwout (son of Roleoff Swartwout - Schout of Esopus)
Jacobus Swartwout (son of Thomas who was son of Roleoff Swartwout - Schout of Esopus)
Harme Van Nimwegen (2nd
Peter DeMoer (Gumear)
Jacob Kuddeback

“Barnardus, (Bernardus Coobes/ Coombes Swartwout ) (bap. 31 OCT 1697), son of Anthony Swartwout, bapt. 22 Oct 1699, Kingston having attained his majority, received his portion of his deceased father's land.
As disclosed in Orange County Records, following persons were freeholders at Maghaghkemeck on July 7,
1728: Samuel Swartwout (s/o Thomas); Barnardus Swartwout (son of Anthony); Jan van Vliet, Jr. (married to daughter of Thomas Swartwout), Harmanus Barentsen van Inwegen (married to widow of Jacobus Swartwout 1701), Pierre Guimar and Jacque Caudebecq." (1) Swartwout Chronicles - page 149-

There are several stories of Harmanus Van Inwegen and he lived to an old age. He even was at the battle with the Jerseymen with Major Jacobus Swartwout. Jacobus Swartwout  bap.  29 MAR 1696 Dutch Reformed Church at Kingston, Ulster CO, NY (son of Antoni bap. 1664.)  m. Annetje Gumear. (Sandechquan to Peter to Phillip)

"It is somewhat uncertain which of the three Swartwouts remained in this neighborhood, but as the seats of Bernardus and Thomas became vacated, and Anthony's continued to be occupied by Van Inwegen, after Samuel and James Swartwout removed more distantly from the neighborhood first settled, I will make use of his name as the father of the two latter." Gumaer, Peter E., A History of Deerpark in Orange CO, N.Y.

What happened to Roelof Swartwout bap.  9 JUN 1695 Dutch Reformed Church at Kingston, Ulster CO, NY.(son of Antoni bap. 1664.)Can find no data on him yet. He was oldest son of Antoni bap. 1664and one would think that he would have gotten a share of his father's lands?

What happened to Antoni Swartwout bap.  22 OCT 1699 Dutch Reformed Church at Kingston, Ulster CO, NY.  d. 1775? .(son of Antoni bap. 1664.) Know of his descendants but not what happened to him from birth, except that he probably lived with his mother and step father. But what happened to him between age of majority and the birth of the two known sons?
Jacobus Swarthout  b. 5 NOV 1734? in Goshen?, Orange CO, NY
Anthony Swarthout, Sr. b. SEP 1735 at Little Britain, Orange CO

For the most comprehensive research done about the Swartwout Family, i recommend Swartwout Chronicles by Arthur Weise. It will be helpful to note - Antoni Swarwout's Widow was Jannetje Jacobusse COOBES. i have never seen her referred to a COOMBES.  i have seen her refered to as a "Sister of the Swartwouts" (Historty of Deepark Peter E. Gumaer) which wasn't entirely false she was a sister by Law to the Swartwouts when she married Harmanus Barentsen Van Inwegen. for those who do not know me, i live in Mamakating (Sullivan) area just North of Deerpark (Orange) - i have lived here nearly all my life, researching over 30 years & am very familiar with the terrain, people & records. A Gumaer Book has been in the works & planning a book on the Peenpack (Magheckemeck) Patent.  Glad to help anyone with questions.
